UrbanInitiatives(UI)weretheleadconsultantsandexhibitdesignersonthe$4.2MRainforestEntryExperiencePrecinctatMelbourneZoo.LocatedonthesiteoftheformerApeHouses,thenewexhibitnowformsthemainentrancetotheRainforestExperienceinthesouth-westernsectoroftheZoo.TheprimarycomponentsoftheRainforestEntryExperiencearetheringtailedandruffedlemurexhibits.ThesehavebeendesignedtoreflecttheZoo’scontemporaryphilosophy,onethataimsforimmersiveorinteractiveexperiences.Theseexperiencescomewithalignedconservationmessagesandactions.

WorkingcollaborativelywithSnowdonArchitectsandinterpretationspecialists,ArterialDesign,UIcreatedanengaging‘walkthrough’experiencewhereringtailedlemursandvisitorssharethesamespace.Theexhibitallowsadirectencounterwiththelemursandtheirenvironment,anexperienceoftenimpossibleinmoretraditionalenclosureswhereanimalsareisolatedfromthevisitor.ThevisitorisimmersedinalandscapewhereplantingandmaterialsreferencetheunusualspinyforestsanddenserlushrainforestsofMadagascar,thelemur’snaturalhabitat.Carefulconsiderationoftheplantingpalettewasrequiredinordertoreferencetheuniquelandscapecharacterofthisremoteandevolutionarydistinctisland.ExpressivearchitecturalandinterpretiveobjectsalsodrawonnaturalformsoftheMadagascanlandscape.Theseformshavebeendesignedtoprovideastimulatingenvironmentforthelemursandanaestheticallyrichoneforthevisitor.

Architecturalcomponentssuchasthewovenentrytunnelandtreehouseprovidebookendstothisimmersiveexperience;theformerfunctioningasanairlocktotheringtailedlemuraviaryandalsoactingtoheightenanticipationofwhatliesahead.Thetreehouseprovidesavisualanchorpointwithintheringtailedlemurexhibitandprovidesanelevatedviewingpointfortheopenaired,ruffedlemurexhibit.Thesteelframedandwovenrattantreehousealsopresentsconservationmessagesrelatedtotherainforestenvironmentandfunctionsasan‘airlock’inthatitprovidesastagedexitfromtheenclosedzonewherevisitorsandlemurssharethesamespace.Anumberofotherwovenpodsatarangeofscalesareembeddedintheexhibit,someofwhichfunctionassleepingquartersforlemurs,othersasfeederpodsandlargeronesasplayitemsforchildren.

Withintheexhibit,everyelementofthelandscapesupportsthestoryandthevision.Theaimwastocreateachoreographedlandscapewheretheexperienceunfolds,revealingglimpsesandviewsinacarefullystagedjourneythroughthespace.Oncethroughthewovenairlockthevisitor’sjourneyextendsacrossastreamandtimberbridge(withintegratedmistingsystem)intothespinyforestforaclose-upencounterwiththelemurs.Theinterpretationelementsallowforconnectionbetweenhumansandthelemurswithopportunitiesforvisitorstoemulatetheuniquebehaviourofringtailedlemurs.Asunkenseatingareaservesasaspaceforthekeeperstoconductpresentationsandhandfeeding.Attheeasternendtheexhibitbecomesanarborealexperienceasvisitorspassoverthestreamviaanelevatedtimberboardwalkandintotherainforestlandscape.Thelemursfreelymoveaboveandaroundvisitorsviaanetworkofarborealvinesandclimbingpoles,avoidingthepubliciftheychoose.Throughcarefullyintegratedinterpretationfeaturesvisitorslearnaboutandareencouragedtoemulatethelemurs.Theseincludecircularbenchesforpractising‘lemuryoga’.

Theprojectwasstronglyfocusedonminimisingenvironmentalimpactsandintegratingmeaningfulsustainabilitymeasures.Keytothiswastherecyclingofmostoverthematerialsfromtheexistingexhibits.Approximately95%ofmaterialswererecycledordivertedfromlandfill.TheexistingconcreteencasedApeHouseBuildingsandexhibitswerecrushedandusedtoraisethebaseoftheexistingcontainmentmoats.Thesemoatswerethenresurfacedtoformanewwaterwaywithintheaviaryandashallowercontainmentmoatwithintheruffedlemurexhibit.Recycledmaterialswerespecifiedandapreferenceforlowmaintenance,lowlifetimeimpactmaterialsadopted.AsanexampleaparallelprojectreplacingtheboardwalkswithintheGreatFlightAviaryprovidedthetimberfortheboardwalkbalustersinthelemurexhibit.Ratherthanimportingmaturetrees,existingspecimentreesfromunderusedpartsofthezooweretransplanted.Thisincludedan8metreBrachychiton,aswellaslargeErythryiaandCeibaspecimens.
